Out of respect for the uniqueness and validity of the self-perceptions and identities of our students, we are establishing gender-inclusive housing options for our residential communities. Gender-inclusive housing is not just for LGBTQ people; it is for anyone who wants to live with people with whom they feel comfortable - no matter their gender. Students who elect this option must be open to living with a person of any gender.
Students are interested in gender-inclusive housing for a variety of reasons. It is our hope that you make the best decision for you. This option is available for continuing students through the Housing sign-up process. Incoming students who believe that this housing option will best support their personal needs as they transition to the UM community may contact the HRL assignments staff to discuss what options may be possible. A student must identify that they are interested in gender-inclusive housing in order to be considered.
Students who do not identify an interest will not be considered and will remain eligible for same-sex housing assignments. We encourage all students to maintain an open dialogue with their families regarding housing decisions. Students over the age of 18 are legally able to make decisions about their housing agreements without parental consent.
Students under 18 should discuss housing plans with their families, as they will be required to have parental consent. Please note, only upperclass and graduate students can form roommate groups. For those interested in gender inclusive housing, please note that one's gender identity information can be updated via Albert in NYU Home. This cannot be done separately in the housing application. Important: In the event that space is not available to accommodate gender inclusive application preferences, students who have elected to participate in gender inclusive housing will be assigned based on their legal sex.
Housing Gender Inclusivity. Legal sex is not an assignment factor for students who indicate a gender neutral preference during the housing application process. In the past, some students have struggled to fully understand the purpose of Gender-Neutral Housing. It is critically important to our ability to facilitate inclusive communities, that students clearly understand the purpose of Gender-Neutral Housing.
Students who are unable to accurately articulate the purpose of Gender Neutral Housing will not be assigned to Gender-Neutral Housing. In your own words, please describe the purpose of Gender-Neutral Housing and what you believe you are committing to by submitting this agreement.
Write in. For those who select the Gender-Neutral Housing option, assignments are made without regard to the gender of the individuals. Placement is gender neutral. The only information that will be used to assign roommates will be the information provided in the roommate preferences page on the housing application and any roommate requests that student made — provided both individuals selected Gender-Neutral Housing.
Gender-Neutral Housing will not limit your bedroom type or apartment options. Gender-Neutral Housing may be assigned anywhere within student housing. This option is not intended for couples to live together. Research has shown that most students who choose to live in Gender-Neutral housing do so with friends and not with those whom they are dating. Yes, you are still encouraged to request a roommate. You will be placed with a mutual roommate request regardless of whether or not they also signed the pledge.
